I cannot believe that we are already in October! Time is flying by. The children are working very hard and are adjusting well to the expectations and demands of the grade one classroom. Here are some of the things we worked on this week:
Language - We are continuing to work on letter identification, letter sounds and proper letter formation when printing. When writing, we are working on stretching out words and writing the letters that represent the sounds we hear. We are also learning to use information in the classroom (names on desks, names on artwork, lists and the word wall) to help us spell. Through our daily shared reading, we are learning to recognize some sight words, learning to apply phonics rules and realizing that if we know small words (eg. at - we can read and write rhyming words - cat, bat, chat, sat, etc.). We are continuing to listen to and discuss books that are read aloud. Each day we are getting to know one person in our class better by orally asking them questions that they answer.
Math - This week we focused on representing numbers to 10, teen numbers and numbers to 50 in different ways (numeral form, number words - to ten, ten frames, tallies, etc.). We are working on orally explaining our math thinking during our daily calendar activities and our math talks.
Science - This week we discussed things that are happen in the fall/autumn.
Health - We are working on making safety posters.
Have a great weekend!
