I hope everyone had a fantastic Thanksgiving weekend! Your child was very excited to share and write about what they did.
Here are some of the things we did this week:
In language, we are continuing to read stories together that practice a particular letter sound. We also brainstorm words that start with this letter/sound and practice printing this letter. While reading the stories, we are practicing making predictions by doing picture walks (reading the pictures), sounding out decodable words (words we can figure out based on the words and letter sounds we already know) and working on high frequency puzzle words (words that appear frequently in texts, bur do not follow our known phonics rules - these are words we need to learn to recognize automatically). We have been practicing three reading strategies so far... 1) Eagle Eye - look at the picture for clues (can you see something in the picture that starts with that letter). 2) Stretchy Snake - stretch out the word and say all the sounds thee letters make slowly, then blend the sounds together more quickly. 3) Flippy Dolphin - if the letter makes two or more sounds (c, y, g, a, e, i, o, u), try one letter sound first and if the word does not make sense, try the other letter sound. We have also been working on writing complete sentences and organizing words into sentences that make sense.
In math we have been working on patterning. We can create, extend and name repeating number and shape patterns. We can make patterns that follow a particular rule (ex. make and ABBA pattern, or make a pattern when the sixth shape is a circle).
In science we have been learning about living and non-living things and we are starting to learn more about plants.
In Phys. Ed and Health we learned about bus safety this week and we are being active (playing cooperative games, stretching, dancing, etc.) in the classroom using Go Noodle and outside.
In Religion/Family Life, we have been focussing on being thankful.
