Week of Oct. 19 - 23

We had another great week of learning in Grade One!

Here are just a few of the things we did this week:

Language - We focused on the short "e" and short "u" sounds. When reading we are practicing using strategies- Eagle Eye (look at the first letter of the difficult word and ask yourself do you see anything in the picture that starts with that letter?), Stretchy Snake (stretch out the letter sounds in the word. Say them slowly at first and then faster and faster to see if it makes a word you know), Flippy Dolphin (if the letter makes more than one sound - try one sound first and if the word does not make sense, try the second sound) and Chunky Monkey (look for little words that you already know inside bigger words to help you - for example - splat). When writing unknown words, we are stretching out the sounds and writing letters for all the sounds we hear. We are also using words we can already read and Word Wall Words (posted in the room) to help us spell more words correctly in our independent writing.

Math - This week we finished up some work on patterning and we started to work on comparing numbers to 5 and 10. For example: 7 is 2 more than 5 (5+2 = 7), but I need 3 more to get to 10 (7+3 = 10). We are also working on numbers greater than and less then other numbers and ordering numbers.

Religion and Family Life - We participated in the virtual Thanksgiving Day Liturgy in our classroom.

Science - We are continuing to learn about living and non-living things. This week we learned about plants. We talked about the parts of a plant, the needs of a plant, the parts of plants that we eat and we even planted some seeds (pea, bean, zinnea, corn, sunflower and grass) to see what will happen!

As you can tell it was a busy and fun-filled week.
